Nicolae Linca

Nicolae Linca (* 1. January 1929 in Cergăul Mare , Alba County ; †  27. June 2008 in Feisa , Alba County) was a Romanian boxer in the amateur field .

Nicolae Linca celebrated his first major success as the winner of the bronze medal in the welterweight division at the European Boxing Championships in Warsaw in 1953 . Two years later he repeated this success at the European Boxing Championships in West Berlin in 1955 . He achieved the greatest success a year later when he won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Melbourne after victories against Hector Hatch , Nicholas Andre , Nicholas Gargano and in the final with a broken right hand against Frederick Tiedt . Tiedt got more points overall, but three of the five referees saw Linca ahead. To date, he is the only Romanian who has won an Olympic gold medal in boxing. Linca died at the age of 79 after suffering from Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease for several years .
