Nicholas (Nicky) Gargano (born November 1, 1934 - April 11, 2016 in West Clandon , Surrey ) was a British boxer . He was European amateur champion in 1955 and winner of a bronze medal at the 1956 Olympic Games in the welterweight division.

Career

Nicky Gargano started boxing at the Eton Manor Boy's Club in 1948 . He later moved to the Covent Gardens Amateur Boxing Club (ABC) . As a young man he joined the British Army and was able to train there.

1954 Nicky Gargano was the first English champion (ABA champion) of the amateur boxer in the light welterweight division. In the same year he started at the 5th Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver , where he won the light welterweight division in front of Rod Litzow, Australia and Hendrik van der Linde from South Africa .

In 1955 he won the English welterweight championship. At the subsequent European Championship of amateur boxers in Berlin , he won over Arko Sardarjan from Bulgaria , the German favorites Günther Heidemann , Pavle Sovljanski from Yugoslavia and Hippolyte Annex from France, each on points and thus became European champion .

In 1956 Nicky Gargano was English champion for the third time in a row and represented Great Britain at the Olympic Games in Melbourne in the welterweight division. He won there over Eduard Borisow from the USSR and Francesco Gelaberti from Italy each on points. In the semifinals he met the strong Romanian Nicolae Linca , against whom he lost on points and thus missed the entry into the final. However, he won the bronze medal.

The international career of Nicky Gargano was limited to the three years 1954 to 1956, because after the Olympic Games in 1956 he started, although only 22 years old, in any international championships. He never became a professional boxer either. In total, he completed 197 fights with 190 wins in his career.
