Günther Heidemann (born October 21, 1932 in Berlin ; † March 15, 2010 there ) was a German boxer . He was a bronze medalist at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics welterweight. For this, the Federal President awarded him the Silver Laurel Leaf on August 1, 1952 .

Career

Günther Heidemann started as a teenager at the Neuköllner Sportfreunde , a Berlin sports club with a strong boxing department. a. and Harry Kurschat and later Oktay Urkal belonged to the boxes. In 1950, at the age of 18, he became the first Berlin lightweight champion. He also won this title in 1951, 1952, 1954 and 1955 in the light welterweight and welterweight classes.

1951 Günther Heidemann was German runner-up in the light welterweight division. He lost to the European champion Herbert Schilling from Zeilsheim in the final battle . In 1952 he won his first German championship title. In the final he defeated Heinrich Rienhardt from Neckarsulm clearly on points. In an additional Olympic qualification, he then defeated Rienhardt again on points and thus had won the ticket for the Olympic Games in Helsinki .

At the Olympic Games, Günther Heidemann won the welterweight round in the preliminary round with 2: 1 judges' votes over Pál Budai from Hungary , defeated Nicolae Linca from Romania by knockout in the first round and defeated the Dutchman Nicolaas Linneman unanimously on points in the quarter-finals. In the semifinals he suffered a 2-1 defeat by the German-born Poland Zygmunt Chychła . Chychła won the next battle with a victory over the Soviet athlete Sergei Tscherbakow the gold medal . For Günther Heidemann, winning the bronze medal was also a great success.

In 1953 Günther Heidemann also started at the European Championships in Warsaw . In welterweight he won in the round of 16 over Döri, Hungary on points, but lost again in the quarterfinals against Zygmunt Chychła and was therefore without a medal.

At the German championships in 1953 and 1954 Günther Heidemann was not at the start. In 1955 he was German champion in welterweight for the second time. He won the semifinals over Fimpel from Kempten (Allgäu) and in the final against Manfred Hass from Misburg . The European Championship took place in Berlin in 1955 . Günther Heidemann had big plans in his hometown and won his first fight against Josef Kaczorowski from the GDR , who turned out to be a very strong opponent, just on points. In the next fight he met the Englishman Nicholas Gargano , who was considered a blank slate. All the more surprising for Günther Heidemann was the point defeat against Gargano and thus the elimination from the tournament without winning a medal. Gargano was later also European champion.
