Harry Kurschat (born November 3, 1930 in Berlin , Germany ) is a former German welterweight boxer. In 1956 he won silver at the Olympic Games. As an amateur he belonged to the Neukölln Sportfreunde , from which Günther Heidemann and later Oktay Urkal emerged .

amateur

Kurschat, who was born in Berlin-Kreuzberg , was a three-time German lightweight champion (1953, 1954, 1956). In 1955 he became European champion in West Berlin . In 1956 Kurschat won the silver medal in the lightweight at the Olympic Games in Melbourne . He lost the final against Richard McTaggart from Britain . For winning the silver medal, he received the silver laurel leaf from the Federal President on January 21, 1957.

professional

In 1958 he became a professional. He won his first thirteen fights. Kurschat made three attempts to win the German welterweight championship, but in each case he failed. In March 1959 he managed only one draw against Rudi Langer , in January 1960 he lost to Conny Rudhof on points. In March 1961 he met Rudhof again, this time he lost the fight by technical knockout in the ninth round.
