Sten Suvio (* 25. November 1911 in Hannila at Viipuri ; † 19th October 1988 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish boxer in the welterweight and Olympic champion of 1936 in Berlin.

Career

Sten Suvio was born in the village of Hannila near Viipuri . In 1929 and 1930 he was Finnish runner-up. From 1933 to 1936 he was Finnish welterweight champion four times in a row.

In 1936 he traveled to the Olympic Games in Berlin. He defeated Ri Keika from Japan, Arthur L. Cook from Australia, the Hungarian Imre Mádin and the Danish Gerhard Peddersen . In the final, he met the German Michael Murach , whom he also defeated and became Olympic champion.

After his Olympic victory, he switched to professional boxing at the age of 24.

Professional career

He played his first professional fight on November 18, 1936 in the Harringay Arena in London against the British David McCleave . Sten Suvio lost in the eight-round fight on points. In May 1937 he won in New York against Tony Greb from New Jersey , United States . In 1937 he fought six more fights until his second defeat in September against Spider Hewitt from the USA. After this defeat he traveled back to Finland.

On February 11, 1938, he defeated the Swede Gunnar Andersson in Gothenburg . A month later he presented himself to Bruno Ahlberg . In the duel between the two Finns, however, there was no winner. In April 1938 he defeated the Hamburg- born Danish Hans Drescher on points in Copenhagen . In autumn, however, Drescher also returned the favor with a point win.

In January 1939, Sten Suvio defeated Peter Kleinhütten from Germany twice by knockout. On June 3, 1939, Dortmund defeated Gustav Eder in Leipzig on points. Eder repeated this success in Berlin in August of the same year . Sten Suvio stayed in Germany until September 1940 and won against Willy Prodel , Walter Müller , Eduard Peters and Fritz Gahrmeister .

In November 1942, Suvio defeated the German Hans Heuser in his hometown Viipuri . In 1945 and 1946 he parted ways with the Danish Henry Nielsen , who defeated Suvio in 1940. In May 1946 Sten Suvio defeated his compatriot Onni Saari by technical knockout. His last professional fight was Sten Suvio on April 26, 1949 in Helsinki against the French Areski Boina . The 37-year-old Suvio lost to Boina with a technical knockout.
