Baqyt Särsekbajew (Kazakh Бақыт Сәрсекбаев; born November 29, 1981 in Pavlodar ) is a boxer from Kazakhstan . He became an Olympic welterweight champion at the 2008 Beijing Games .

Career

Baqyt Särsekbajew, a 1.73 m tall and approx. 70 kg heavy athlete, appeared in the international boxing ring for the first time in 2002 at the Asian Games in Busan . At that time he still started for Uzbekistan . In Busan he was light welterweight and won there over Udone Khanxay from Laos on points (13:11), then defeated Musaffer Jussupbekow from Kyrgyzstan by breaking off in the third round and lost in the semifinals to Nurschan Karimschanow from Kazakhstan on points (19:23 ), with which he took 3rd place.

He also competed for Uzbekistan at the 2003 World Cup in Bangkok . In Bangkok he showed his first fight in the light welterweight division against Diógenes Luna from Cuba, a courageous fight and was only narrowly defeated (23:24) on points. He was eliminated before the second round and came in 17th place.

In 2004 Baqyt Särsekbajew moved to Kazakhstan and was the same Kazakh welterweight champion with a victory over Daulen Jelensinow. For participation in the Olympic Games in Athens he could not qualify.

In 2005 he was again Kazakh welterweight champion with a victory over Vladimir Ulyanov and also won the welterweight championship at the Asian Championships in Ho Chi Minh City with a victory over Aliasker Basirow from Turkmenistan .

2006 Baqyt Särsekbajew was again Kazakh welterweight champion. He then took part in the 1st Presidents Cup in Astana and lost there in the final against his compatriot Vladimir Ulyanov on points (30:39). He was nevertheless used at the Asian Games in 2006 in Doha in the welterweight division and showed himself there in outstanding form. He beat Eshak Waez from Syria (24: 3), Aliasker Başirow from Turkmenistan (49:26) and Qanat Ïsläm from China (37:30) on points and defeated Anghkan Chomphuphuang from Thailand in the final battle by breaking off in the 2nd round.

Baqyt Särsekbajew was also very active in 2007. He first started at the Kings Cup in Bangkok , but lost there in the quarter-finals against Olympic champion Manus Boonjumnong from Thailand on points, placing him in 5th place. At the Ahmet Comert tournament in Istanbul he won victories over Dawid Tabatadze from Ukraine , world champion Erislandi Lara from Cuba a. Natig Alishov from Azerbaijan . In the semifinals of this tournament he lost to Abduldadir Kuroğlu from Turkey and thus reached 3rd place. At the 2007 World Cup in Chicago , he won the welterweight division over Xavier Noël from France (18: 7), Velibor Vidić from Bosnia-Herzegovina (26: 4) and Pedro Lima from Brazil (23:11) on points. In the quarterfinals he lost to Qanat Ïsläm (14:20) and came in 5th place. But this place was enough for him to qualify for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing .

Before these games, Baqyt Särsekbajew first checked his form at the Kings Cup in Bangkok. He beat the Japanese Hiroyuki Hirakawa by breaking off in the 3rd round and the Mongols Bjambyn Tüwschinbat on points, but lost in the final against Qanat Ïsläm again on points (17:19). He then also took part in the Ahmet Comert tournament in Istanbul and won this welterweight tournament with victories over Yavuz Kiliç, Turkey , Dmitri Ivanov, Russia and Adem Kılıççı , Turkey.

At the Olympic Games in Beijing, he then crowned his previous career, as he became Olympic champion there with five safe victories . He won over Adam Trupish from Canada on points (20: 1), then defeated Vitalie Grușac from Moldova by breaking off in the 2nd round and came to further points wins over Dilschod Machmudow, Uzbekistan (12: 7), Jung Joo-Kim , South Korea (10: 6) and Carlos Banteur (Banteaux) from Cuba (18: 9).

In the 2010/11 season Särsekbajew started for the Astana Arlans in the World Series of Boxing and was able to win four of five fights. He was defeated by the Belarusian Mahamed Nurudsinau .
