Carlos Banteur Suárez (born October 13, 1986 in Santiago de Cuba ) is a Cuban boxer . He won a silver welterweight medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics .

Career

Carlos Banteur started boxing as a teenager in his native Santiago de Cuba, the city where he still lives. He quickly developed into an excellent boxer and became Cuban junior champion in 2004. He started this year in the Cuban Senior Championship and came in third place in the light welterweight division behind Estenio Gutiérrez and Yudel Johnson. With a height of 1.85 meters, it has excellent physical conditions in terms of its range. He boxed for a long time in light welterweight (class up to 64 kg body weight) before he switched to welterweight (class up to 69 kg body weight) in 2007.

He made his debut in international championships in 2004 at the Junior World Championships in Jeju-si, South Korea . With three early wins and one point win, he was in Jeju in a superior style junior world champion in light welterweight.

At the Cuban Championship 2005, Carlos Banteur lost to defending champion Estenio Gutiérrez in the quarterfinals on points and therefore ended up in 5th place. In the same year he boxed for the first time in Germany . At the chemistry cup in Halle (Saale) he defeated Robby Siebert from Germany on points and Martin Swoboda from the Czech Republic by breaking off in the 3rd round and won the light welterweight tournament with a non-fighting victory over Dilschod Mahmudow, Uzbekistan . At the "Giraldo Córdova Cardín" memorial in Havana , the largest Cuban tournament at international level, he reached the final with victories over William Mena, Dominican Republic and Azimkhan Beisenbajew from Kazakhstan, in which he beat his compatriot Inocente Fiss on points (4-7 ) was subject. He was then used in October 2005 at the AIBA World Cup in Moscow , a tournament that was held in the form of international matches, but had to pay the hard way there, because he lost both to Kunat Orakgajew from Kazakhstan (36:44) and also against Oleg Komissarow from Russia (25:30) each on points.

At the Cuban Championship 2006 Carlos Banteur reached the final, in which he was defeated, however, Inocente Fiss just on points (23:24) and had to be satisfied with the runner-up title. At the so-called 3rd Cuban Olympiad, an international tournament in Havana, he reached the final with three wins, in which he was defeated on points against Yudel Johnson, Cuba. He did not yet qualify for the World Cup in Mianyang / People's Republic of China .

In 2007 Carlos Banteur lost in the Cuban light welterweight championship in the round of 16 against Andres Aldana because he had to give up due to an injury and ended up in 9th place. He drew his conclusions from this and switched to the next higher weight class, the welterweight. He was not used in this weight class at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro . After several boxers left the Cuban team at this championship and sought political asylum in the United States and Germany, Cuba did not take part in the 2007 World Cup in Chicago because "the safety of the Cuban team was not guaranteed". In reality, they were probably afraid that more boxers would not return from the trip abroad.

Due to this non-participation, the Cuban boxers first had to qualify for the Olympic Games in Beijing . After the best Cuban welterweight boxer, Erislandi Lara , was banned from active sport by the Cuban federation for life after his aborted attempt to escape from Rio de Janeiro , Carlos Banteur was No. 1 in the welterweight division in Cuba. In March 2008 he won the welterweight competition in Port of Spain / Trinidad at the 1st American qualifying tournament for Beijing with four victories, thus gaining the right to start at the Olympic Games. He then won three high-ranking international tournaments in Kiev , Valencia / Venezuela and Havana. At the Strandja tournament in Plovdiv / Bulgaria he lost on points in his first fight against the Englishman Billy Joe Saunders . He then won the 2008 Pan-American championship in Cuenca / Ecuador in the welterweight division. In the final of this championship he defeated John Jackson from the Virgin Islands clearly on points.

After intensive preparation for the Olympic Games in Ecuador, Carlos Banteur won points in Beijing over Billy Joe Saunders, whom he dominated this time with 13: 6 goals, Hosam Bakr Abdin from Egypt (10: 2) and Qanat Ïsläm from China (17 : 4) and faced the Kazak Baqit Sarsekbajew in the final battle for the gold medal . Sarsekbajew dictated this fight and left Carlos Banteur no chance of victory (9:18). Carlos Banteur did not manage to win a gold medal in boxing in Beijing like no other of his relay mates.

At the end of 2008 he won the welterweight competition at the World Cup in Moscow in December . In the semifinals he won there against Jack Culcay-Keth from Germany and in the final against Dilschod Mahmudow from Uzbekistan with 15: 4 goals on points.

The AIBA - World Championships in Milan in September 2009, the Banteur set as tournament favorites difference already unexpectedly in his second fight against Canadian Mikael Zewski from (2: 5), after having previously prevailed clearly against the American Errol Spence (11 :1).

In 2010 Banteur took part in the Pan American Championships and won the silver medal after losing to Myke Carvalho , Brazil (9: 6) in the final . At the World Championships in the following year he was eliminated in the preliminary round against Taras Shelestyuk , Ukraine (17:15), but he was able to win the Pan American Games in the same year .

In 2012, Banteur was suspended from competition because of unspecified "indiscipline", due to which he, like Emilio Correa, was not accepted into the Cuban Olympic team at the London Summer Games . After more than half of the deadline, the ban was lifted at the end of the year. Since his return to the Cuban championships in December 2012, Banteur has been competing in the 75 kg class. In his middleweight debut, he reached the final, which he lost 15:23 against Yasiel Despaigne from Pinar del Río. In 2013 he was again allowed to travel to competitions abroad with the national team.
