Yudel Johnson

Yudel Johnson Cedeño (born June 6, 1981 ) is a Cuban boxer . Johnson was a gold medalist at the 1999 Pan American Games and the 2006 Central American and Caribbean Games , and a silver medalist at the 2004 Olympic Games .

Career

amateur

Johnson won the silver medal in the junior division (U19) at the Pan American Championships in 1998 in light flyweight (-48 kg).

Johnson played his first international men's tournament in 1999 at the Central American and Caribbean Championships in Mexico City , where he won the gold medal in the featherweight (-57 kg). Shortly afterwards he also took part in the Pan American Games in Winnipeg , which he surprisingly won. At the World Championships in the same year, however, he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Ramazi Paliani, Turkey (11: 2). The Cuban Championships 2000 ended for Johnson in the round of 16, so that he was not nominated for international competitions that year.

2001 Johnson finished second in the national championships in welterweight (-67 kg). His opponent in the final was Lorenzo Aragón (8: 4). In the same year he also took part in the Goodwill Games in Brisbane and won this tournament with a final victory over Anthony Thompson , USA (19:16). In 2002 Johnson won the Cuban championships for the first time and in the same year the chemistry cup in Halle . At the World Cup in Astana he beat u. a. Daniel Geale , Australia (RSC 2nd), and Manus Boonjumnong , Thailand (15: 5).

In 2003 and 2004 Johnson won the silver medal at the national championships, where he started in 2004 for the first time in light welterweight (-64 kg). Since he prevailed in the internal elimination, Johnson started at the American Olympic qualification tournament in Rio de Janeiro , which he won ahead of Rock Allen , USA (23:15). At the 2004 Olympic Games , Johnson reached the final after winning over Davis Mwale, Zambia (RSC 3rd), Dilshod Mahmudov, Uzbekistan (32:28), and Boris Georgiew , Bulgaria (13: 9), the final, which he lost to Manus Boonjumnong (17:11) and thus won the silver medal.

On May 22, 2009 Johnson played his first professional fight in Miami , which he won by technical knockout in the first round. He also defeated his next eleven opponents and contested two title fights for the Central American Championship of the WBC . In May 2012 Johnson lost to Willie Nelson, USA unanimously. After three development battles, he won the WBC Central America title again in 2014. He then boxed three more fights in 2015, of which he just won the first by split decision and clearly lost the last two on points or technical knockout.
