Manus Boonjumnong

Manus Boonjumnong ( Thai : มนัส บุญ จำนงค์ , pronunciation: [ má-nát bun-ʤam-noŋ ]; born June 23, 1980 in Ratchaburi Province , central Thailand ) is a Thai boxer and 2004 Olympic champion .

At the Asian Games in Busan in 2002 , he was eliminated in the quarter-finals. In 2003 the counter-boxer lost in the light welterweight division to the Russian Alexander Maletin in the semifinals of the World Cup in Bangkok and won bronze. In 2004 he took part in the Olympic Games in Athens and became Olympic champion with a victory over the reigning world champion Willy Blain and a controversial final victory over the Cuban participant Yudel Cedeno .

According to the Thai media, he brought the huge prize money to the people with a Playboy lifestyle, and his athletic performance deteriorated. But in 2006 he reported back by winning the Asian Games in Doha , in the semifinals he was against the Kazakh two-time world champion Serik Säpijew on the ground, but won just on points. In the final, he beat the South Korean Hoon Shin-myung. However, his participation in the 2007 World Cup in Chicago was disappointing , so he lost in the first round against the Japanese Masatsugu Kawachi .

In 2008, he was back to his form, qualifying with a victory at the first Asian qualifying tournament for participation in the Olympic Games in Beijing . There he retaliated against the Japanese Kawachi for the defeat at the World Cup and reached the final with further victories against Serik Säpijew and the Cuban Roniel Iglesias , in which he surprisingly lost to Félix Díaz from the Dominican Republic and thus finished second.

After Boomjumnong had not participated in international tournaments for more than two years, he finished third in the middleweight division (-75 kg) at the Southeast Asian Games in 2011 .

Manus Boonjumnong's brother Manon is also a successful amateur boxer who reached the welterweight final at the 2007 World Cup .
