Patrizio Oliva
Patrizio Oliva (born January 28, 1959 in Naples ) is a former Italian boxer who was an Olympic and professional world champion.
amateur
The southpaw Olivia was Junior European Champion (U19) 1978 in the lightweight (-60 kg).
At the Mediterranean Games in Split in 1979 he won the bronze medal in the light welterweight division (63.5 kg) and the silver medal at the European Championships in the same year. In the final he lost to Serik Konakbajew , Soviet Union (4-1). Olivia met just that in the final of the 1980 Olympic Games . After previous victories over Aurelien Agnan, Benin (RSC 1st), Farez Halabi, Syria (RSC 3rd), Ace Rusevski , Yugoslavia (3: 2), and Anthony Willis, United Kingdom (5: 0), he won also return the favor at Konakbayev (4: 1) and thus won the gold medal. He was also awarded the Val Barker Cup for the best boxer of the tournament. Oliva won 93 out of 96 fights as an amateur.

In 1980 Oliva became a professional. In 1981 he won the Italian light welterweight championship against Giuseppe Russi and after four defenses in 1983 the European Championship against the French Robert Gambini. In the following years Oliva defended this title a. a. against Antonio Guinaldo, Spain , Jose Ramon Gomez, Spain (TKO 4th), Michel Giroud, Switzerland , and Alessandro Scapecchi, Italy and also beat Juan Jose Gimenez, Argentina . In 1986 Oliva had established himself so far in the world elite that he became a challenger for the world title according to the version of the WBA . In March 1986 he beat the reigning world light welterweight champion Ubaldo Nestor Sacco, Argentina, by split decision (147-144, 145-141, 140: 145). In 1987 Oliva defended the world championship title against Rodolfo González, Mexico , but lost it in the same year to Juan Martin Coggi, Argentina, by a knockout loss in the third round.
After this first defeat in his professional career, Oliva rose to welterweight and was also European champion in this weight class in 1990 with a victory over Kirkland Laing, United Kingdom. Oliva defended this title twice before getting another chance at the world championship title in 1992. However , he had to admit defeat to the reigning world champion Buddy McGirt , USA , clearly on points and then ended his career after 57 wins (20 KO's) in 59 fights.
After his active career, Oliva became a trainer and entrepreneur. Among other things, he was the trainer of the Italian Olympic selection in 1996 and 2000. Together with his wife Nilia, he runs a piano bar in Formia and he runs the company Consorzio CSA for archiving and document management. He is also a frequent co-commentator on boxing broadcasts on Italian television.
