Diógenes Luna

Diógenes Luna Martínez (born May 1, 1977 ) is a former Cuban amateur boxer. He was junior lightweight world champion in 1994, welterweight world cup winner in 1998 and light welterweight world champion in 2001, and in 2000 he won a bronze medal at the Summer Olympics in Sydney.

Career

As a 17-year-old he took part in the 8th Junior World Championships in Istanbul in September 1994 , where he won against Ranko Tegeltija from Yugoslavia, Toufik Seddoud from Algeria, Wladimir Kolesnik from Ukraine, Andy Schiemann from Germany and Dmitri Pavlutschenko from Russia, who won the gold medal.

In 1998 he won the 18th Central American and Caribbean Games in Venezuela and the 8th World Cup in Beijing . He beat José Luis Zertuche from Mexico and Nurhan Süleymanoğlu from Turkey in the finals .

In 1999 and 2000 he was Cuban light welterweight champion. At the 13th Pan American Games in Canada in 1999 , he won a bronze light welterweight medal; He was defeated by Víctor Castro from Argentina in the semifinals. At the World Championships of the same year in Houston , he lost in the quarterfinals against Lukáš Konečný from the Czech Republic.

In 2000 he represented Cuba light welterweight at the 27th Summer Olympic Games in Sydney . With wins against Willy Blain from France (25:14) and Saleh Abdelbary Maksoud from Egypt (knockout), he made it to the semifinals, where he lost to Ricardo Williams from the USA just 41:42.

In 2001 he was also able to win the light welterweight, the 27th Central America and Caribbean Championships in the Dominican Republic, where he defeated the Mexican Juan De Dios Navarro in the final. He also won the 11th World Championships in Belfast in June of the same year . He had defeated Domingos Santos from Brazil, Ionuţ Dan Ion from Romania, Nasimi Ajdinow from Azerbaijan, Yuri Solotow from Ukraine and Dimitar Shtiljanow from Bulgaria in the light welterweight division .

After Luna failed in the semifinals of the national championships in 2002, he was able to reach the final again in 2003, which he lost to Inocente Fiss (22: 9). After an internal elimination, however, he was able to prevail and started at the 2003 World Championships in Bangkok , where he a. a. won against Baqyt Särsekbajew from Kazakhstan, but had to admit defeat in the quarterfinals Willy Blain , France (47:29). In the same year he started at the Pan American Games , where he was eliminated in the quarterfinals.

In 2005 Luna started again at the national championships, but failed in the preliminary round and then ended his career.
