Ricardo Williams (born June 25, 1981 in Cincinnati , Ohio ) is a retired American boxer .

amateur

Southpaw Williams won the National Golden Gloves in 1998 and was US light welterweight champions in 1998 and 1999. At the Amateur World Championships in Houston in 1999 , he failed in the second round of the tournament to Mahamadkadir Abdullajew from Uzbekistan .

In 2000 he qualified for participation in the Olympic Games in Sydney , where he won the silver medal. His semi-final victory over the Cuban Diógenes Luna is considered one of the most spectacular fights of the tournament. In the final, however, he was again defeated by the Uzbek Abdullajew.

professional

In 2001 Williams turned pro. He was signed by Lou DiBella , received a multi-million dollar bonus ($ 1.4 million) for signing the contract, and plenty of advance praise. But just like with Abdullajew and the much-vaunted Mexican Francisco Bojado, he was unsuccessful in the professional business, which in the USA was attributed to his laziness and drug problems. Although he defeated Terron Millet, after a desolate performance he lost to the Mexican Juan Valenzuela (15 wins, six losses) and later to the almost 44-year-old Manning Galloway . He rose to the light middleweight division . Shortly thereafter, at the age of 23, he was forced to retire after being sentenced to three years in prison in May 2005 for drug trafficking.

In 2008 Williams returned to the ring and won his next nine light heavy and welterweight bouts before losing to Carson Jones by TKO in the fourth round in 2011. In 2012, Williams won the light welterweight division in his 25th fight against Luis Ramos Jr., who had been unbeaten in 23 fights.
