Andy Cruz Gómez (born August 12, 1995 in Matanzas ) is a Cuban boxer .

Career

Cruz started boxing in 2008 and in 2012, at the age of 17, won a bronze medal at the Cuban men's light flyweight championships (-49 kg). In 2014 he won the prestigious Copa Roberto Balado in bantamweight (-56 kg) . In the same year he also reached the final of the Cuban Championships, in which he was defeated by the 2012 Olympic champion Robeisy Ramírez with 2-1 judges' votes. At the Pan American Games in Toronto in 2015 , Cruz defeated Dominican Hector Luis Garcia in the final and won his first international title. In the same year he also won the Pan American Championships in Vargas . At the 2015 World Championships , Cruz retired after beating Bakhtovar Nasirov , Russia (2: 1) in the last 16 , in the quarter-finals against later bronze medalist Dzmitryj Assanau , Belarus (3: 0).

In 2017 he won the Pan American Championships in Honduras and the World Championships in Germany , defeating Iqboljon Xoldorov in the final . At the 2019 World Cup in Yekaterinburg , he repeated winning the gold medal, this time in the lightweight.

World Series of Boxing

In the 2015 season, Cruz replaced the injured Robeisy Ramírez in the Cuban team of the World Series of Boxing after two fights. He won all five fights by the end of the season, finishing fourth in the ranking. Since the second-placed Michael Conlan qualified for the 2016 Olympic Games via the 2015 World Championships and the third-placed Magomed Gurbanov was not registered by his association, this fourth place was enough for Cruz to also qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games.
