Kenneth Stanley Reightler junior (born March 24, 1951 on Naval Air Station Patuxent River , State of Maryland , USA ) is a retired American astronaut .

education

Reightler received a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering from the United States Naval Academy in 1973 and a masters degree in aerospace engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School in 1984 and another master's degree in systems management from the University of Southern California .

In August 1974 Reightler completed his training as a naval aviator with the United States Navy . After being stationed in Florida, Iceland and Sicily, he completed training as a test pilot at the US Naval Test Pilot School in Maryland. From 1978 he worked as a test pilot and as an instructor for test pilots. In June 1981 he was transferred to the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower in the Mediterranean. In March 1985, he returned to the US Naval Test Pilot School as the chief instructor for the pilots.

Astronaut activity

After an unsuccessful application for the eleventh group of astronauts, Reightler was selected in June 1987 by NASA as a candidate for astronauts with the twelfth group. He was head of the space station department of the astronauts office, head of the mission support department, chief liaison officer ( CAPCOM ), chief astronaut for the development of flight software and computer systems, representative of the flight crew operations department in the program requirements control board, weather coordinator for space shuttle launches and -Landings and representative of the astronauts office for take-offs, landings and aborted take-offs.

STS-48

On September 12, 1991, Reightler took off into space for the first time as a pilot of the space shuttle Discovery . During this five-day mission, the UARS satellite was deployed to explore the upper atmosphere . The 6.5 ton satellite performed one of the most detailed studies of the earth's atmosphere, including the ozone layer.

STS-60

On February 3, 1994 Reightler took off again as a pilot of the space shuttle Discovery into space . A special feature of this flight was that Sergei Krikaljow was the first Russian spaceman to fly an American spaceship. The Wake Shield Facility and the Spacehab module were the main payloads on board.

In July 1995 Reightler left NASA and moved to Lockheed Martin as Vice President , and has been Senior Vice President since September 2001.

Kenneth Reightler is married with two children.
