Spacehab
The Spacehab (also SPACEHAB) was a module for the space shuttle and served as storage space for experiments. It was developed in the mid-1980s by the private US company of the same name (head office is Webster in Texas ).
The Spacehab was originally developed in order to provide more space for scientific experiments as a space laboratory . It was supposed to enlarge the crew cabin of the US space shuttle. The maiden flight of a Spacehab unit took place in the summer of 1993 with STS-57 .
Similar to the European Spacelab , in addition to a pressurized module (either as a single or double unit), the company also offered open platforms (so-called integrated cargo carriers) that are firmly anchored in the orbiter's payload bay. In contrast to the Spacelab, the upper part of the module was designed as a straight surface in order to allow devices to be attached more efficiently.
The Spacehab was last used on STS-118 in August 2007.
