Integrated cargo carrier

The Integrated Cargo Carrier (ICC) is a support structure for securing up to 3,175 kg of non-pressurized external loads in the cargo bay of the Space Shuttle . It was used on 12 flights between 1999 and 2010 and carried a total of over 17,000 kg to the space station and 6,500 kg back to Earth.

history

In 1997, the development of a pallet system for payloads was started in order to be able to use the remaining loading capacity optimally when the Space Shuttle flew with the Spacehab . Astrium was able to acquire the usage rights for the entire system from the US company SPACEHAB. The pallets are still owned by Astrium, two of which were given to NASA for a one-time rental fee for permanent use to store spare parts at the ISS .

Layout and function

The grid-like support structure UCP (Unpressurized Cargo Pallet) was manufactured by RKK Energija . The design made payloads attached to the structure easily accessible to astronauts.

By using a U-shaped strut KYA (Keel Yoke) it was possible to attach payloads across the payload bay above the tunnel to the Spacehab. These beams, manufactured by ALJO Aluminumbau in Berne , were provided by Astrium. The ICC system is made up of these two components.

With the deployable versions, the entire UCP can be removed from the payload bay and attached to the ISS, for example.

By using standard connections, the power and data could easily be supplied from the shuttle, the Spacehab or the ISS.
