John Mugabi (nickname " The Beast "; born March 4, 1960 in Kampala ) is a Ugandan boxer and Olympic medalist .

amateur

Mugabi was a bronze medalist at the 1978 African Games , with which he qualified for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow , where he won after victories over Georges Koffi , Congo (knockout 1), Paul Rasamimanana , Madagascar (knockout 2). , Mehmet Bogujevci , Yugoslavia (knockout 1), and Kazimierz Szczerba , Poland (3: 2), and a final defeat against Andrés Aldama , Cuba (1: 4), won the silver medal in welterweight (up to 67 kg).

In an international match, Mugabi lost to Jochen Bachfeld , GDR in 1979 .

He played his first professional fight on December 5, 1980 against Oemer Karadenis, whom he defeated by knockout in the first round. Mugabi then moved from Kampala to London and then to Florida . He boxed mostly in the light middleweight division and knocked out all 25 opponents .

On March 10, 1986 Mugabi made his first fight for a world title a class higher in the middleweight division against Marvin Hagler , but he lost by knockout in the eleventh round. He was promoted in this fight by the German Wilfried Sauerland , who now owns the Sauerland boxing stable .

With a renewed attempt at a title, but now in his actual class, the light middleweight, the fight was ended on December 5, 1986 against Duane Thomas in the third round, after Mugabi had suffered an eye injury / broken bone in the face from a hard blow.

On July 8, 1989, he won the WBC world title against René Jacquot, which he knocked down in the first round, so that the Frenchman dislocated his ankle.

On March 31, 1990 he lost to Terry Norris by a spectacular knockout in the first round again.

His last attempt a "world champion" title (WBO) on November 20, 1991 in the middleweight division against Gerald McClellan was unsuccessful.
