"Terrible" Terry Norris (* 17th June 1967 as Terry Wayne Norris in Lubbock , Texas ) is a retired American boxer . He is the younger brother of former cruiserweight champion Orlin Norris .

career

Terry Norris had an amateur boxer record of 291 wins and four losses and started a professional career in 1986. He distinguished himself from an early age by a large technical repertoire, coupled with unusual speed and great clout. However, his lack of ability to take was considered a weakness.

After Norris could deny his first twelve fights all victorious, he finally lost on August 13, 1987 against Derrick Kelly on points. That same year he suffered his second defeat when he was disqualified against Joe Walker - not for the last time in his career . Then Norris defeated the so far undefeated Quincy Taylor , as well as the eventual world champion in super middleweight Steve Little .

After Norris had signed with boxing promoter Don King , he challenged the WBA world champion Julian Jackson , feared for his clout, on July 30, 1989 . Although he had dominated his opponent at the beginning of the fight, Norris lost his first title fight when he was already severely knocked out in round 2.

Just a few months later, on March 31, 1990, Norris received another title chance. He challenged the WBC title holder John Mugabi , who also had impressive clout. This time Norris was able to secure the world title with a spectacular first-round knockout. A point win over the aging superstar Sugar Ray Leonard in his second title defense finally helped Norris in 1991 to its final breakthrough.

As a world champion, Terry Norris was known for often boxing against opponents who originally came from lighter weight classes. So were Meldrick Taylor , a far from top form distant Donald Curry and Maurice Blocker no actual Halbmittelgewichtler. After Norris had defeated them all prematurely, he insulted other well-known boxers from the lower weight classes, such as Julio César Chávez , Pernell Whitaker and Óscar de la Hoya and tried to provoke them to a fight. He defended his title a total of ten times until 1993 - among others against the later titleholders Carl Daniels and Jorge Castro or in February 1993 in a technical knockout victory in the IBF junior middleweight match in Mexico City against Maurice Blocker from the USA. A rematch against Jackson or a fight against the hard-hitting WBA title holder Julio César Vásquez , who was Jackson's successor, never happened.

On December 18, 1993, Norris was dethroned in his eleventh title defense by former welterweight Simon Brown - who was struggling with severe health problems and almost quit - by knockout in the fourth round. Norris was able to win the revenge against Brown six months later and regain his title, but his aura was tarnished. Already against his next opponent and 25-1 outsider Luis Santana - who was defeated in seven of his last ten fights - Norris lost his title again when he was disqualified for looking up. Also in the rematch, Norris was disqualified on points in the lead for looking up. Only when the two boxers met for the third time was Norris able to win through a technical knockout in the second round.

After Terry Norris regained his WBC title for the second time, he split from Don King to get a fight against Óscar de la Hoya with the help of promoter Bob Arum . Despite the best efforts, the fight ultimately never materialized.

On December 16, 1995, Norris also won the IBF title in a title unification fight against Paul Vaden . After a total of four title defenses, however, the IBF title was withdrawn from him because he did not face the mandatory challenger. After two non-title fights, which Norris could decide ahead of time, he lost the WBC title on December 16, 1997 to his compatriot Keith Mullings by technical knockout in round nine. After another defeat by Dana Rosenblatt , he challenged WBA World Champion Laurent Boudouani from France in November 1998 . After another knockout loss in lap nine, Norris finally ended his career.

Apart from two brief interruptions, Terry Norris was WBC light middleweight champion for almost seven years, where he successfully defended his title 16 times. In addition to his WBC title, he also held the IBF World Championship title for 13 months, which he was able to successfully defend four times. In total, Norris played 30 world championship fights, of which he was able to finish 24 victorious.

In 2005, Norris was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
