Horse tamer (horse pond)

Bernhard Michael Mandl (last name also Mandel, Mändl, Männl, Mendl ; * around 1660 in Bohemia ; † March 23, 1711 in Salzburg ) was probably the most famous baroque sculptor in the city of Salzburg.

From around 1690 Mandl lived in Salzburg. He married a daughter of the local sculptor family Götzinger and also worked for several years in the family's sculptor workshop.

Works

  • The horse tamer of the Marstallschwemme was Mandl's first great work. The motif of the horse tamer is a baroque theme that is often depicted, which characterizes the competition of passion with the (victorious aristocratic) order. Here clear echoes of the depicted body horse of Archbishop Johann Ernst von Thun with the body horse of Alexander the Great defeating the body horse Bucephalus. Through the sliding ceiling, the horse guide merges with the wild horse to form a perfect, powerful unit. The mane of the horse's boldly curved head also makes the powerful movement clear. Allegedly Prince Eugene wanted to acquire this statue later, after a negative decision a reworked copy of this work was allegedly made.
  • Salzburg, Salzburg Cathedral : St. Peter and St. Paul. The two apostles are shown here in a new personal and individual expression and for the first time without any baroque pathos.

  • Salzburg, Kollegienkirche . Eb's coat of arms in the gable. Johann Ernst Graf von Thun, coronation of the gable Maria Immaculata, angels to the side; on the top of the tower the four evangelists (left) and the four church fathers (right).
