Julio César Vásquez (born July 13, 1966 in Santa Fe , Argentina ) is an Argentine professional boxer.

Professional career

The strong southpaw Vásquez became a professional light middleweight in his home country in 1986. He won his first 30 fights, then lost in May 1991 to the American Verno Phillips by disqualification.

On December 21, 1992 he succeeded in Buenos Aires as the first in the world rankings at that time to win the vacant junior WBA middleweight title by a first-round knockout over the Japanese Hitoshi Kamiyama , who was then number 5 in the world rankings. He defended against Javier Castillejo and Aaron "Superman" Davis on points , among others . He went down twice against the unknown Russian Dottuev. He beat the up to then undefeated "Winky" Wright on points. Vásquez is the only boxer to date who has had Wright on the ground. On March 4, 1995, he finally lost his title to the smaller southpaw and star boxer Pernell Whitaker . Although he had Whitaker on the ground twice, otherwise he had no chance and was clearly defeated on points over twelve rounds.

Whitaker quickly put the title down; the vacant belt was then won by another southpaw, the American Carl Daniels, against whom Vásquez then received another chance for the title on December 16, 1995. In the fight he succeeded in the eleventh round, trailing behind hopelessly on points, still the knockout and thus the second title win.

In the next fight he went KO against Laurent Boudouani from France . He continued to box after that, but was never able to build on his old performance. He lost to British Robin Reid in 2001 and to later Russian WBO title holder Denis Inkin in 2004 .

In 1994 Vásquez was named Argentina's Sportsman of the Year ( Olimpia de Oro ).
