Denis Anatoljewitsch Inkin ( Russian Денис Анатольевич Инкин ; born January 7, 1978 in Novosibirsk , Soviet Union ) is a Russian boxer .

Amateur career

Denis Inkin spent most of his amateur time in the Russian military. There he fought in 1994 the titles of Russian master in the age group of cadets (U-17) and the European champion of cadets in the light middleweight division. In 1996 Inkin became Russian Junior Champion. In 1997 he won the middleweight division at the World Military Championships in San Antonio . In 1998 he took part in the Goodwill Games in New York and lost there against the Cuban Ariel Hernández due to injury in the third round. In 1999 he also won the middleweight title at the World Military Championships in Zagreb .

Professional career

Denis Inkin began his professional career in June 2001. In his second professional fight he defeated the Armenian Mger Mkrtchian , a later European champion and challenger to the WBO world champion Joe Calzaghe . In September 2004 he was able to beat former world champion Julio César Vásquez prematurely. Further development battles followed with the aim of winning a recognized world championship. Inkin has been under contract with the German Universum Box Promotion since 2005 and trains in Hamburg under Magomed Schaburow . On October 21, 2006 he defeated his stable mate Mario Veit by knockout in round seven.

With four more victories, including against the hitherto unbeaten Hungary József Nagy , Inkin reached number one in the WBO world rankings, as well as among the top four in the other three important associations WBA , WBC and IBF . After he canceled twice planned fights against the British Carl Froch for the vacant WBC World Championship, he should first box against his Hungarian stable mate Károly Balzsay for the interim title of the WBO. However, since Balzsay injured himself in preparation, the Colombian Fulgencio Zuniga was signed as a substitute opponent at short notice . In addition, the fight was upgraded to a full WBO World Championship, as Joe Calzaghe resigned the title after eleven years. Inkin defeated the powerful Zuniga on September 27, 2008 in the Hamburg Color Line Arena over twelve rounds on points.

In his first title defense on January 10, 2009 in Magdeburg , he then had to play against Károly Balzsay. In a largely even fight, Balzsay was able to prevail with a narrow point win. Inkin suffered the first defeat of his professional career and surrendered the WBO title after only 3.5 months.
