Ariel Hernández
Ariel Hernández Azcuy (born April 8, 1972 in Guane , Pinar del Río , Cuba ) is a former Cuban amateur boxer .
Amateur career
Hernández played as an amateur 269 fights, of which he won 248. Between 1992 and 1998 he was seven times Cuban national middleweight champion. His first international successes were the victories at the Junior World Championships in 1989 in Bayamón as a welterweight and in 1990 in Lima as a light middleweight.
Olympic games
In 1992 Hernández was selected as the Cuban middleweight representative for the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona and won the gold medal with victories over Sven Ottke and in the final over Chris Byrd .
At the 1996 Games in Atlanta , he was able to successfully defend the title. On the way to Olympic victory, he again beat Sven Ottke and the Russian Alexander Lebsjak , Olympic champion of the year 2000 in the light heavyweight division.
World championships
Hernández also won two titles at the amateur world championships. First in 1993 in Tampere , where he managed another victory over Ottke and in 1995 in Berlin . At the title fights in Budapest in 1997 , he controversially lost in the final against local hero Zsolt Erdei and finished second. In 1999 in Houston he failed in the first round of the tournament against Romanian Adrian Diaconu .
