Shin Joon-sup

Shin Joon-sup ( Hangul : 신준섭, Hanja : 申俊燮; born June 17, 1963 in Namwon , Jeollabuk-do ) is a former South Korean boxer . Shin won the gold medal at the 1984 Olympics and the 1984 Asian Games .

Career

Shin started boxing at the age of 16 and first started in 1982 for the South Korean boxing selection at the Tammer tournament in Tampere , where he finished third in the middleweight division. The following year he took part in the World Cup in Rome and was able to win it with victories a. a. win over Pedro Gamarro , Venezuela (5-0), and Noe Cruciani, Italy (4-1), which also qualified him for the 1984 Olympic Games .

At the Olympics, Shin won the gold medal. During the tournament he defeated Patrick Lihanda, Uganda (5-0), Rick Duff, Canada (4-1), Jeremiah Okorodudu, Nigeria (4-1), Arístides González , Puerto Rico (4-1), and in the final Virgil Hill , United States (3-2).

In 1986 Shin started at the World Championships , but was eliminated in the first fight against Henry Maske , GDR (3-2). In the same year he was able to win the Asian Games after beating Narong Inphrom, Thailand (5-0) in the final .

After the career

Shin received a master's degree in exercise science from Wonkwang University . In 1992 he was assistant coach of the South Korean Olympic team and worked for many years as a college lecturer before emigrating to the USA in 1996.

He now lives in Atlanta , Georgia and runs his own business.
