Harry Mallin (born June 1, 1892 in London , † November 8, 1969 there ) was a British boxer . He was Olympic middleweight champion in 1920 and 1924.

Career

Harry Mallin grew up in London and started boxing as a teenager . He initially belonged to the Eton Old Boys ABC (amateur boxing club). In 1919 he was the first English champion of amateurs in the middleweight division. He won this title also in the years 1920 to 1923. From 1921 Harry Mallin was a member of the Metropolitan Police ABC.

In 1920 the first Olympic Games after the First World War took place in Antwerp . Harry Mallin started in the middleweight division (then up to 72.6 kg). In contrast to today, several representatives from one country were allowed to compete in one weight class. Harry Mallin defeated Joseph Alfred Cranston from the USA on points in Antwerp , Samuel Joseph Lagonia from the USA by disqualification in the 2nd round, Montgomery Herscovitch from Canada on points and in the final battle Georges Arthur Prud'homme from Canada also on points and was thus Olympic champion .

At the Olympic Games in Paris in 1924 he was back in the middleweight division. In his first two fights he defeated Trygve Stokstad from Norway on points and Erich Siebert from Switzerland by breaking off in the 2nd round. In his third fight against the Frenchman Roger Brousse there was a unique scandal. During this fight, Harry Mallin was apparently bitten several times in the chest and arms by the French. The Belgian referee did not react to protests from Mallin and at the end of the fight the referee declared Brousse the 2-1 point winner. Mallin protested against this decision, but was initially not heard. Only when the Swedish member of the IOC Oscar Söderlund took on this case and the Argentine Manoel A. Gallardo, who had lost to Brousse a round earlier, testified that he had also been bitten by Brousse several times during the fight, the jury changed that Result of the fight Mallin against Brousse in a disqualification win for Mallin.

In the semifinals, Harry Mallin defeated Joseph Beecken from Belgium on points and was in the final against his British compatriot Jack Elliott. And here the scandal continued. At the beginning of the fight, Roger Brousse suddenly appeared in the ring in sportswear and wanted to fight Jack Elliott for the gold medal. After much back and forth, the police were only able to clarify the matter by removing Brousse from the ring under the protest of the French audience. In the only possible final, Harry Mallin defeated Jack Elliott on points and was Olympic champion for the second time .

Harry Mallin, who was a member of the London police for 37 years, ended his career as an active boxer after these Olympics. He then worked as an honorary boxing trainer and supervised a. a. also his younger brother Fred, who was also five times British amateur boxing champion from 1928.
