José Gómez Mustelier
José Gómez Mustelier (born January 28, 1959 ) is a former Cuban boxer . He was world champion of amateurs in 1978 and Olympic champion in 1980 in the middleweight division.
Career
José Gómez started boxing as a teenager and quickly developed into a world class boxer. At the age of 18, the 1.82 m tall, very agile and technically excellent boxer was Cuban runner-up in the senior middleweight division. During his time as an active boxer he was nominally a member of the Cuban armed forces, but had all the freedom to pursue his sport.
In 1977 he won the Central American and Caribbean Championships in Panama City . A knockout victory in the first round over Carlos Abarca from El Salvador and a demolition victory in the third round over Carlos González García from Colombia was enough for him to win the title.
In 1978, 1979, 1980, 1982 and 1983 Gómez became the Cuban middleweight champion. In 1982 and 1983 he defeated Bernardo Comas in the final , who was his toughest competitor for Cuba's starting positions in the international championships.
In 1978 he started at the World Cup of Amateurs in Belgrade . In the middleweight division he came to a non-fighting victory over Matoung Essadeg from Liberia , then defeated Phil Elwaine from Australia on points (4: 1), defeated Slobodan Kačar from Yugoslavia by breaking off in the 2nd round and also won the final over Tarmo Uusivirta from Finland , which he beat 5-0 judges' votes on points. At the age of 19 he became world champion .
In 1979 Gómez came to the "Golden Belt" tournament in Bucharest to a break-off victory in the 3rd round over the strong Valentin Silaghi , who later emigrated to the Federal Republic of Germany and earned many services there as a coach. In the same year he also won the Pan American Games in San Juan , Puerto Rico . In the middleweight division he came to a points win over James Williamson from the United States, a knockout win id 1st round over Alfred Thomas from Guiana and a demolition win id 1st round over Carlos Fonseca from Brazil .
Gómez's successful streak continued in 1980. He defeated at the important boxing tournament of the Cuban Boxing Association Giraldo Córdova Cardín in Holguín middleweight Bernardo Comas on points and secured the starting place at the Olympic Games this year in Moscow . In the first round of the Olympic boxing tournament, he met Enock Chama from Zambia , who was completely unknown in the international boxing scene and who demanded a lot from him and whom he only narrowly defeated with 3: 2 judges' votes. In the next fight he came to a knockout victory in the 2nd round over Chang Bon Mun from North Korea and in the semifinals he defeated Valentin Silaghi on points. In the final battle, he defeated the Soviet favorite Viktor Savchenko in a technically superior battle with 4: 1 judges' votes and thus became Olympic champion .
In 1981 there were no world championships. But Gómez won the Giraldo-Córdova-Cardín tournament again over Bernardo Comas and also came first at the boxing highlight of this year, the World Cup in Budapest in the middleweight division. He won over Harry Black from Canada by KO in the 1st round, over Amir Jabbar from Iraq by breaking off in the 2nd round and over Juri Torbek from the USSR on points (5-0).
1982 Gómez was Cuban middleweight champion, but retired from the "Giraldo-Córdova-Cardín" tournament early. For this reason, Bernardo Comas , who won this tournament, was sent to the world championship in Munich , where he secured the world title in the middleweight division. For Gomez in 1982 only the victory in the championship of the armies of the Warsaw Pact in Havana remained . There he won the middleweight finals over Zoltan Füzesy from Hungary on points.
After Gómez had become Cuban middleweight champion again in 1983 with a demolition win in the 2nd round over Bernardo Comas , he started at the Chemistry Cup in Halle (Saale) and had to be beaten there by Henry Maske from the GDR on points. This defeat was followed by another at the Giraldo-Córdova-Cardín tournament in Santiago de Cuba , where he was defeated by his tough competitor Bernardo Comas on points. Comas therefore received the Cuban starting place in the middleweight division at the Pan American Games. Jose Gomez achieved another remarkable victory in 1983 when he beat Virgil Hill , who would later become professional world champion, on points in an international match between Cuba and the USA in Havana .
At the end of 1983 he ended his career as a boxer. He was only 24 years old at the time, but had been in high-performance training for almost ten years.
