Tommaso Russo

Tommaso Russo (born August 31, 1971 ) is a former Italian middleweight boxer, 1991 world champion and 1992 Olympian.

Career

In 1989 he won the 8th Italia Junior Tournament , defeating Jürgen Hartenstein from Germany, István Lengyel from Hungary and Didier Poujol from France. He also reached second place at the 17th Gazeta Pomorska tournament in Poland. In February 1990 he took part in an international match against the USA, where he was defeated by a 1: 2 judge's decision against Ronald Simms.

In March 1991 he reached second place at the 11th Trofeo Italia tournament in Italy, after losing just 3-2 to Torsten Schmitz in the final. At the European Championships in Sweden in May 1991, he lost to Robert Buda from Poland.

In November 1991 he took part in the 6th World Championships in Sydney , where he by victories against Mark Edwards from England (TKO), Ahmed Dine from Algeria (22:14), Chris Johnson from Canada (27:21) and Alexander Lebsjak from the Soviet Union (22:17) won the gold medal. He also won the European Olympic qualification tournament in San Pellegrino Terme , with a final victory over Dirk Eigenbrodt .

At the 25th Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona, however, he was eliminated from Ahmed Dine 4-6 on points in the first fight.
