Dirk Eigenbrodt (born April 10, 1969 in Frankfurt (Oder) ) is a former German boxer . He was European middleweight champion amateurs in 1993.

Career

Dirk ("corner") Eigenbrodt started boxing as a teenager in his hometown. He attended the children's and youth sports school in Frankfurt (Oder), then joined the National People's Army and became a member of the ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt (Oder) army sports club . He was trained there mainly by Karl-Heinz Krüger , a former top boxer in the GDR.

In 1987 he was used at the Junior World Championship in Havana in the middleweight division, where he came in 3rd place with a victory over Carlos Grados from Peru and a point defeat against Wilfredo Martinez , thus winning his first medal at an international championship.

As a senior, it was difficult for him from 1988 to assert himself in the middleweight division in the GDR and, after German reunification in 1990, in Germany . That was because he was in Henry Maske , who, however, converted to the professionals in 1990 and had very tough competition in Bert Schenk , Torsten Schmitz , Norbert Nieroba and Sven Ottke . In 1988 he finished 3rd behind Henry Maske and Torsten Schmitz at the GDR Middleweight Championship. After that he only took part in a German championship again in 1991. He was eliminated in the semifinals against Norbert Nieroba with a point defeat and took 3rd place. Then in 1993 he won his first title. With a point win over Bert Schenk (16:12), he became German middleweight champion.

Dirk Eigenbrodt did not make any further appearances at international championships between 1989 and 1992. But from 1991 he delivered excellent fights for his club, the Boxring Frankfurt (Oder) in the German Bundesliga, lost in 1991 against Sven Ottke, TSC / BR Berlin just by 1: 2 judges votes and defeated, among others, Manfred Gebauer , Bayer 04 Leverkusen , Bert Schenk, TSC / BR Berlin, Torsten Schmitz and Torsten Bengtson , both SC Schwerin , Norbert Nieroba, BSK 27 Ahlen , Vitalish Bbege , Sparta Flensburg , Wolfram Schmidt , SC Schwerin and the Dutch champion Raymond Joval (third place in the 1993 World Cup), the started for Bayer 04 Leverkusen. With the Boxring Frankfurt (Oder) , which was later renamed Boxring Brandenburg , he became German team champion in 1992, 1994 and 1995.

From the beginning of 1992 Dirk Eigenbrodt was part of the provisional German Olympic squad for the 1992 Games in Barcelona . He also started in 1992 at the Olympic qualification tournament in San Pellegrino Terme, where he won a second place in the middleweight division for the German boxing association. In the final of this tournament he was defeated by the 1991 world champion Tommaso Russo from Italy just on points (7: 8). Unfortunately he was injured afterwards and could not take part in the German championship in 1992. Sven Ottke was German champion and starter at the Olympic Games in Barcelona.

In 1993 Dirk Eigenbrodt managed to win a points over Sven Ottke (16:13) at the chemistry cup in Halle in the middleweight final, which brought him the tournament victory. In the final of the German championship in 1993, he faced Bert Schenk and defeated him with 16:12 goals and thus became the first German champion in the seniors. He then proved his great ability at the European Championships in 1993 in Bursa . He became the new European middleweight champion with a third round abandonment victory over Boudadse, Georgia and points victories over Raymond Joval (9: 3), Davidenko, Ukraine (5: 0) and Alexander Lebsjak , Russia (2: 0) .

In 1994 Dirk Eigenbrodt was again German middleweight champion with a points win over his club colleague Marcel Bellack. In 1995 he lost in the final of the German championship against Sven Ottke on points (10:16). He was still used at the 1995 World Cup in Berlin because Ottke started there in the light heavyweight division. In Berlin he defeated Brian Magee , Ireland (10: 2), Zsolt Erdei , Hungary (10: 4) and Gheorghe Oprea, Romania (9: 2) on points. In the quarter-finals, he met Mohamed Mesbahi from Morocco , against whom he found no remedy, and just lost with 1: 2 goals. He finished 5th.

In 1996 Dirk Eigenbrodt evaded the German championship in the light heavyweight division in order not to meet Sven Ottke in the middleweight division . However, he then lost in the final of this weight class against Torsten Bengtson on points (11:14). Even later he did not manage to fight for a place in the Olympic Games of that year.

In 1997 he was used again at a world championship. He started in Budapest in the middleweight division, where he won a bronze medal in points over Ion Ionita, Romania (14: 6) and Dimitri Strelchinin, Russia (10: 8) and a point defeat against Zsolt Erdei (5: 7) . After this great success, he did not compete in any other championships.

After finishing his career, during which he was a member of the Bundeswehr, he joined the Federal Customs Administration and is now a customs officer in Hamburg . He also took over a coaching position at the young boxing club TSV Hittfeld , of which he is the "Spiritus Rector".
