Professional career

After eleven wins against opponents , ten of which were knocked out, he became IBO intercontinental champion in the super middleweight division in January 2001 in Peterborough with a points win against Neil Linford (11-2) and then beat Chris Nembhard (6-1) early in the sixth round. On December 10, 2001, he won the IBO World Super Middleweight Championship in London . He managed a knockout win in the first round against Ramón Arturo Britez (32-12).

After a subsequent build-up victory against Vage Kocharyan, he was able to win the championship belt against Mpush Makambi (23-7), Jose Spearman (19-4), Miguel Ángel Jiménez (21-2), Andre Thysse (14-1), Omar Eduardo González (25-4), Hacine Cherifi (34-8) and Jerry Elliott (37-3) defend. In his eighth title defense on June 26, 2004 in Belfast , he lost his IBO belt by losing points to Robin Reid (36-4), and he had to go down four times against his opponent.

After another win against Neil Linford, he boxed on July 16, 2005 in Nuremberg for the EBU European Championship in the super middleweight division against the Ukrainian Vitali Tsypko (17-0). Magee was defeated, however, just on points (split decision). After two successive build-up wins, he fought on May 26, 2006 in London for the British and Commonwealth championship in super middleweight against Carl Froch . Magee went down in the first lap, while Froch suffered a hand injury and a cut in his right eye from a hit in the fourth lap . In the eleventh round Magee was severely knocked out by an uppercut and suffered his first premature defeat.

Then Magee switched to light heavyweight and defeated Paul David (5-1), Andrew Lowe (16-1) and Danny Thornton (21-12). On August 25, 2007 he tried to secure the British championship title in this weight class against Tony Oakey (24-2), but only reached a draw whereby Oakey remained the title holder. After three more victories against build-up opponents in the light heavyweight division, he boxed on December 13, 2008 for the British championship title in the super middleweight division against Stevie McGuire (14-0) and won by knockout in the eighth round.

In his next fight on January 30, 2010 in Aarhus , Denmark , he was able to secure the vacant EBU European title in the super middleweight division by knocking out Mads Larsen (51-2) in the seventh round . He had previously hit the Dane three times. In August 2010 he defended the title in Dublin early in the eighth round against Roman Aramyan (30-8) from Armenia.

On March 19, 2011, he rose to challenge current IBF World Champion Lucian Bute (27-0) in Montreal , but lost prematurely due to a knockdown in the tenth round. But just four months later he secured the interim WBA super middleweight championship in Costa Rica by winning points against Jaime Barboza (17-4) and defended it in Denmark in February 2012 by knockout in the fifth round against Rudy Markussen (37 -2). On November 1, 2012 he was finally named the new regular WBA world champion without a fight after Károly Balzsay had been stripped of the title.

Just under a month later, he lost the world championship belt prematurely on December 8, 2012 to Mikkel Kessler (45-2).
