Hacine "Billy" Cherifi (born December 12, 1967 in Lyon ) is a former French professional boxer and WBC world middleweight champion.

Cherifi became a professional boxer in 1989 and fought his first 23 fights on French soil. He was on October 19, 1996 by a points victory over the Russian Alexander Saitsew, European middleweight champion. He successfully defended his title against Croatian Branko Sobot and Briton Neville Brown before retiring to box the WBC world championship belt.

The first attempt to secure the title in the super middleweight division failed due to a point defeat by the Briton Robin Reid . On April 24, 1999, he defeated the US American Keith Holmes unanimously on points in the middleweight division and thus secured his WBC world title. But in a rematch against Holmes eleven months later, he lost his title again due to a technical knockout in round 7.

In September 2000 he boxed against William Joppy for the WBA middleweight world title, but lost by losing points over 12 rounds. In July 2001 he tried to secure the interim world title against Harry Simon according to the version of the WBO , but failed again by losing points over 12 rounds. He also suffered a defeat against Félix Trinidad in May 2002.

In July 2003, his attempt to become European champion again failed due to a technical knockout in round 9 against the Briton Howard Eastman . Four months later he also lost the IBO world championship match against Brit Brian Magee due to a technical knockout in round 8.

After five more fights, including defeats to Felix Sturm and Rudy Markussen , he ended his boxing career in June 2005.
