Harry Simon (born October 21, 1972 in Walvis Bay , South West Africa ) is a Namibian professional boxer and former WBO world champion in the light middle and middleweight division.

Career

As an amateur boxer, he won the welterweight gold medal in 1991 at the 5th Pan-African Games in Cairo . In this weight class he also started for his home country at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona , where he was just defeated by Aníbal Acevedo (11:13) from Puerto Rico in the first fight . In 1994 he turned pro in South Africa.

After 16 wins in a row, 14 of them by knockout, he won the WBO World Light Middleweight Championship on August 22, 1998 by winning points against Ronald Wright . Until 2001 he defended the title against Kevin Lueshing from Great Britain, the Argentine southpaw Enrique Areco, the American Rodney Jones and the undefeated Wayne Alexander.

On July 21, 2001 he won the interim WBO World Championship by winning points against Hacine Cherifi and thus received a title chance for the regular WBO World Championship belt against the undefeated Armand Krajnc , which he defeated on points on April 6, 2002 in Copenhagen . Due to a serious traffic accident, he had to temporarily end his career.

Between 2007 and 2012 he fought four successful fights in Namibia and Kenya.

Life

His sporting success was only marred by a traffic accident in 2001 in which two people were killed. Simon was never charged with dubious incidents in the investigation. In addition, he made more headlines with fights, alcohol and money problems than with his athletic achievements.

In November 2002, he was again involved in a fatal traffic accident in which three Belgian tourists, including a child, were killed. Four other people were seriously injured. The Belgians wanted to turn right into a holiday complex on the road between the Namibian coastal towns of Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, Simon came towards them on their lane at an estimated 160 km / h, and there was a head-on collision in which both vehicles were thrown around 40 meters away.

In the 2002 accident trial on July 9, 2007, he was sentenced to four years in prison, two of which were suspended. He was released on April 8, 2009 after 21 months.
