Carl Froch , MBE (born July 2, 1977 in Nottingham ) is a former British professional boxer who was four times world champion in the super middleweight division in his professional career.

Amateur career

Carl Froch started boxing at the age of nine. He was English middleweight champion in 1999 and 2001. At the 33rd European Championships in 2000 in Tampere , Finland , he was eliminated in the quarterfinals on points against the Croatian Stjepan Božić .

In 2001 he took part in the middleweight division at the 11th World Championships in Belfast , where he was able to win the bronze medal. He defeated the bronze medalist of the 2000 Olympic Games, the Azerbaijani Wugar Alakparow 21:12, the Greek Olympian Antonios Giannoulas 27:14 and the Czech Ladislav Kutil 28:14, before losing to eventual world champion Andrei Gogolew 16:28 in the semifinals . He also became the first British medalist at amateur world championships.

Professional career

Carl Froch played his first professional fight on March 16, 2002 in London. In 2004 he won the British and Commonwealth Super Middleweight Championship and defended the title several times until 2007, including against Brian Magee and former WBC World Champion Robin Reid .

In 2008 he was nominated for a fight for the vacant WBC world championship in super middleweight and as an opponent the Russian Denis Inkin was planned, who could already defeat him as an amateur. Inkin canceled the duel twice and finally fought for the WBO title , also laid down by Joe Calzaghe .

The unbeaten Canadian Jean Pascal, who came from Haiti, then moved up. Froch defeated Pascal on December 6, 2008 in the Trent-FM-Arena in Nottingham over twelve rounds by unanimous decision on points. He denied his first title defense in the USA against former middleweight world champion Jermain Taylor . After he himself had to go to the ground in the third round for the first time in his professional career, he also scored a knockdown in the twelfth and final round, from which Taylor could not recover, so that the fight was broken off shortly afterwards in favor of Froch. On the score sheets of two judges, he was already behind after the eleventh round with 102-106, so he could no longer win the fight on points.

Then Froch, like Taylor, was invited to the super middleweight tournament " Super Six World Boxing Classic ", which was conceived and organized by the US television broadcaster Showtime in cooperation with Sauerland Event . As part of the first group stage of this tournament, he defended the WBC title on October 17, 2009 in his hometown of Nottingham against the previously undefeated American Andre Dirrell . Dirrell often presented Froch with big problems in this fight with his clear advantages in speed and agility, but after the end of the twelve rounds Froch was awarded a narrow and controversial victory on points.

In his second "Super Six" fight, Froch competed against former WBA world champion Mikkel Kessler from Denmark . The fight took place on April 24, 2010 in the Danish city of Herning . Kessler took advantage of the home advantage, unanimously won the intense duel on points and inflicted his first defeat in his eight-year professional career. In the last preliminary round fight on November 27, 2010 in the Finnish capital Helsinki , Froch won against the German-Armenian Arthur Abraham on points. With this success he finished the group stage behind Andre Ward in second place and again secured the WBC super middleweight title, which had become vacant after Kessler's injury-related withdrawal from the tournament. In the semifinals he prevailed on June 4, 2011 with a points win against the Jamaican Glen Johnson and moved into the final of the "Super Six" tournament. His opponent there became the reigning WBA world champion Andre Ward. Froch lost to the undefeated US-American in the final fight on December 17, 2011 in Atlantic City by a unanimous loss of points (115-113, 115-113 and 118-110) and thus ended the tournament in second place.

In his next fight, however, Froch received another title chance; the long-time IBF title holder Lucian Bute , who had not participated in the "Super Six" tournament, denied a voluntary title defense against him. Froch defeated the previously unbeaten Romanian on May 26, 2012 in Nottingham by technical knockout in the fifth round and won a world title for the third time.

After a knockout win against Yusaf Mack, he played a rematch against Mikkel Kessler in May 2013 and this time won unanimously on points and thus Kessler's WBA title. Since Froch also held the IBF title, his regular WBA title was upgraded to the Super World Title according to the applicable rules.

In November 2013 he won early through tKo in the ninth round against George Groves (19-0). The victory was considered controversial because, in the opinion of many critics, the referee had stopped the fight too early. Froch went down himself in the first round and was behind all three judges at the time of the cancellation. He was also able to win the rematch against Groves on May 31, 2014 through tKo in the eighth round. On February 3, 2015, Froch resigned his IBF title because he did not want to compete against James DeGale, who was designated by the association as a mandatory challenger . Due to continued inactivity, he was also stripped of the WBA world championship belt. On July 14, 2015 Froch announced his retirement from active boxing due to lack of prospects.

Boxing style

Carl Froch is considered an excellent technician in the ring, with an above-average work rate and punch. Due to his good ability to anticipate, he is able to adapt to the boxing styles of his opponents. He is also in a good condition, so that he can fight over the full distance without any problems. His taker qualities are also well above average. As a result, he was often able to turn fights in which he was behind on the point slips towards the end.

Carl Froch's grandparents are called Aleksandra and Wojciech Froch and come from Kraków. They left Poland during World War II .
