Vüqar Mursal oğlu Ələkbərov (German also Wugar Alakparow , English transcription : Vugar Alakparov ; born January 5, 1981 in Mingəçevir , Azerbaijani SSR , Soviet Union ) is a former boxer from Azerbaijan who won the Olympic bronze medal in 2000.

Boxing career

Ələkbərov was initially active in rowing, where he was able to achieve two national championship titles. At the end of 1995 he switched to boxing, where he won a national championship title after around 18 months of training. In 1999 he won the middleweight gold medals at the Brandenburg Cup in Germany and the Sorokin Memorial in Russia, as well as the silver medal at the Romanian Golden Belt Tournament . A participation in the European Championships 2000 in the Finnish Tampere , where he could have qualified for the Olympic Games, could not financially afford the Azerbaijani boxing federation.

Due to his previous successes, however, he was granted a license by the Olympic Committee to participate in the 27th Summer Olympics in Sydney in 2000 , where he started in the middleweight division. There he met Peter Kariuki, the Kenyan bronze medalist of the Pan-African Games in 1999, and defeated him 12: 3 on points. In the round of 16, he met Australian Paul Miller, who had won the gold medal at the Oceanic Championships four months earlier and was playing here in Sydney in front of a home crowd. Ələkbərov won the fight, however, just 9: 8 on points and moved into the quarter-finals. In his fight there, he met the native Georgian Akın Kuloğlu , who started for Turkey and had qualified for the Olympic Games with a third place at the 1999 World Championships . Here Ələkbərov was able to prevail with 18: 8 on points and was thus in the semifinals against Jorge Gutiérrez from Cuba, vice world champion of 1999. This was defeated Ələkbərov finally 9:19 on points and was eliminated from the games with a bronze medal. He became the first Azerbaijani medalist at the Olympic Games in boxing and, alongside Namig Abdullajew (gold in wrestling) and Zemfira Meftəhəddinova (gold in shooting), one of only three Azerbaijani medal winners at these summer games.

He was then sent to the World Championships in Belfast in June 2001 , where he was defeated, however, in the second preliminary round against Carl Froch from Great Britain. Also at the European Championships in 2002 in Perm , Russia , he was eliminated in the round of 16 against the Ukrainian Oleg Maschkin . In 2003 he won the silver medal in the light heavyweight division at the World Military Games in Catania . He achieved a remarkable victory against Clemente Russo in the quarterfinals .

By winning the gold medal at the Feliks Stamm Tournament in Poland, he also qualified for the 28th 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens , where he competed in the heavyweight division. There he beat the Greek Spiridon Kladouhas 18:14 in the second round, but was eliminated in the quarter-finals against the Syrian Naser Al Shami by disqualification .

At the 10th World Cup in Moscow 2005 and the 11th World Cup in Baku 2006, he took part in the heavy and super heavyweight division. He won for his team against Li Zheshuan from China (30:12), the reigning US champions Jonte Willis (knockout) and Alexander Makarow from Kazakhstan (22: 2), but lost to Vitali Mikschiejenko from Ukraine ( 20:26) and Odlanier Solís from Cuba (4:22). In addition, he started in the super heavyweight division in 2005 at the World Championships in Mianyang , where he had to admit defeat to local hero Zhang Zhilei in the round of 16 .
