Zhang Zhilei

Zhang Zhilei ( Chinese  张 志 磊 , Pinyin Zhāng Zhìlěi ; born May 2, 1983 in Henan ) is a Chinese professional boxer . Zhang was the bronze medalist of the 2004 and 2011 Asian Championships and the 2007 and 2009 World Championships , the silver medalist of the 2007 Asian Championships and the 2008 Olympic Games, and the 2009 Asian Championships winner.

Career and international success

Zhang Zhilei is a Chinese boxer who finished second in the super heavyweight division at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The 2.00 m tall athlete prevailed against his main rivals Bin Li and Zhang Yunlong in the Chinese qualifications and has been number 1 in China since 2006.

He began his international career in 2003 with a start at the World Cup in Bangkok . There he was defeated in the round of 16 against Grzegorz Kielsa from Poland and came in 9th place. At the Asian Championships in 2004 he reached third place behind Rustam Saidov from Uzbekistan and Sergei Kharitonov from Tajikistan and thus won a bronze medal. At the 2004 Universities Championship in Antalya he reached the final, in which he was defeated by Rustam Saidow on points.

At the 2005 World Cup in Mianyang , China , Zhang Zhilei won against Wugar Alakparow from Azerbaijan on points and lost in the quarterfinals to eventual world champion Odlanier Solis from Cuba on points (7:17). He came in 5th place.

In 2007 Zhang Zhilei won an international tournament in Wurumaqi / China with a points victory over his compatriot Akepaer Yusupu. At the 2007 World Cup in Chicago, he won by breaking off in the 3rd round over Nurpais Torobekow from Kyrgyzstan, won over Rustam Rygebajew from Kazakhstan on points (20:10), knocked out Daniel Beahan from Australia in the 2nd round and was defeated in the semifinals against Vyacheslav Hlaskov from Ukraine on points. By reaching the semi-finals, however, he had already won the bronze medal .

At the Olympic test tournament in Beijing in late 2007, Zhang Zhilei won against Andres Ruiz Ponce from Mexico on points, but was unable to compete in the semi-final against Denis Sergejew from Russia due to an injury.

In 2008 he tested his form at the Feliks Stamm tournament in Warsaw. He won there over Roman Kapitanenko from Ukraine clearly on points (23: 5). In the following fight against European champion Islam Timursijew from Russia he won by dropping out in the second round, but benefited from the fact that Timursiyev had to give up injured.

At the Olympic tournament in Beijing , Zhang Zhilei won convincingly over Mohammed Amanissi, Morocco (15: 0) and Ruslan Myrtsatajew from Kazakhstan (12: 2). In the semifinals he came to a non-fighting victory over Vyacheslav Hlaskow . In the final, however, World Champion Roberto Cammarelle from Italy showed him his limits. Cammarelle won by breaking off in the 4th round. Zhang Zhilei won the silver medal with it .

In 2009 Zhang became Asian champion, beating the Uzbek Sardor Abdullayev in the final (11: 8). In the same year he also started at the world championships . In these he reached the semifinals after victories over Sardor Abdullayev, Uzbekistan (11: 5), Erik Pfeifer , Germany (12: 8), and Primislav Dimovski, Macedonia (6: 2), which he did against Roman Kapitanenko , Ukraine ( 5: 2), lost and won the bronze medal.

At the 2011 Asian Championships, Zhang lost in the semi-finals against Doszhan Ospanov, Kazakhstan (16:15), and at the World Championships this year, too , he did not get past the second round, which he played against the eventual bronze medalist Ivan Dytschko , Kazakhstan (13: 7) , lost.

After Zhang won the Asian Olympic qualification tournament in Astana in 2012 , he took part in the 2012 Olympic Games in London , in which, after beating Johan Linde , Australia (RSC 2nd), in the quarter-finals against eventual Olympic champion Anthony Joshua , Great Britain ( 15:11), lost.

Chinese championships

Zhang Zhilei is a multiple Chinese super heavyweight champion. But only the individual result of 2005 is known. That year he won the final against Bin Li on points.
