According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has an area of 3.3 km² , which consists entirely of land.
US Highway 12 is the main road through the town. On the highway, about 10 km to the west, is Dassel , and to the east the road leads to Howard Lake.

At the time of the United States Census 2000, Cokato lived in 2727 people. The population density was 822.6 people per km ². There were 1035 housing units at an average of 312.2 per km ². The Hoquiam population was 96.81% White , 0.15% Black or African American , 0.26% Native American , 0.44% Asian , 0.04% Pacific Islander , 1.25% said other races belong to and 1.06% named two or more races. 2.68% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race. 29.5% of the population were of German , 24.2% of Finnish , 15.3% of Swedish and 9.8% of Norwegian descent.
