Buffalo is a city centrally located in the US state of Minnesota . It is the administrative seat ( County Seat ) of Wright County and has over 10,000 inhabitants (as of 2000).

Geographical location

The small town of Buffalo is located in the northwest of the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area in the midwestern United States. Minneapolis is around 50 kilometers southeast. Buffalo is surrounded by three larger lakes: Buffalo Lake in the southwest of the city, Pulaski Lake in the north, and the slightly smaller Mary Lake southeast of Buffalo. According to the United States Census Bureau , the area of ​​the city is 20.2 square kilometers, of which 4.6 square kilometers is water.

history

The areas around the Buffalo and Pulaski lakes were used by the Indians as a settlement and for hunting and fishing very early on . At that time the area called Big Woods was still densely forested. Later in the 19th century the Indians and whites of European descent also used it to trade fur . With the withdrawal of the Indians in reservations , settlers of European descent settled there. The first permanent settler in Buffalo Township was Augustus Prime in April 1855. A year later, the settlement within the township, from which the county seat and the city of Buffalo developed.

Since the second half of the 20th century, Buffalo saw a great increase in population. The number rose from 3275 inhabitants in 1970 to around 14,000 inhabitants in 2006 (Census estimate).
