The warehouse of the former company "Universal Laboratories" is on the National Register of Historic Places . The head of the company, a former teacher named Peel, had noticed in the mid-1930s that the farmers in the area destroyed their rye when it was infected with ergot . Medical uses were already known for the ergot alkaloids formed in this way . To market this, he had the building built in 1937. The business was boosted by the fact that the previous suppliers failed, namely Russia because of the Russian Revolution and Spain because of the Spanish Civil War . With the support of customers such as Eli Lilly and Company , the company became the most important supplier in the USA during World War II. The company ceased operations in 1975. The building stood empty until the late 1990s and is now the seat of the regional historical society.
