Naser Al Shami

Naser Al Shami ( Arabic ناصر الشامي, DMG Nāṣir aš-Šāmī ; Born June 27, 1982 ) is a Syrian boxer .

Career

Al Shami played his first international championships in 2001 at the Mediterranean Games from which he was eliminated early. At the Asian Championships in 2002, he finished third and achieved the same placement at the Asian Games in 2002 .

At the 2004 Asian Championships, Al Shami won the gold medal with a final victory over Paweł Storożuk, Kazakhstan, and qualified for the 2004 Olympic Games , in which he won against Emmanuel Izonritei, Nigeria (30:17), and Wugar Alakparow , Azerbaijan (DQ 4th), the semifinals which he lost against Odlanier Solís , Cuba (RSC 3rd), and thus won the Olympic bronze medal.

In 2005 Al Shami won the bronze medal at the Mediterranean Games and the following year at the Asian Games . At the Pan-Arab Games in 2007 he won the gold medal and ended his career.

On June 4, 2011, Al Shami took part in demonstrations in the city of Hama as part of the Syrian civil war and was shot six times in the thigh and lower leg by security forces and also lost the little finger of his left hand from a bullet. Through the mediation of a Syrian doctor, Al Shami came to a Dortmund hospital and was operated on there.
