There are various institutes and libraries that maintain papyrus collections . Some papyrus collections also contain written objects made of other materials such as parchment or ostraka . The conservation, cataloging, storage and evaluation of old papyrus fragments requires special expertise and air-conditioned storage rooms, so that by no means every large library is able to store papyri . A substantial part of the holdings of most German collections is due to the activities of the German Papyrus Cartel in the period before World War I. The papyrus cartel bundled the budgets of the German universities and prevented the German universities from unwittingly outbidding each other to buy. The purchased pieces were divided as a percentage of the budget made available. The most complete list of papyrus collections worldwide can be found on the Trismegistos portal (see links below).

  • The Papyri Gissenses is a collection of the ancient historian Ernst Kornemann (1868–1946) and the industrialist Wilhelm Gail (1854–1925) from Giessen. This papyrus collection was originally kept in the museum of the Upper Hessian History Association in Gießen before it was transferred to the university in 1930. It contains, among other things, a copy of the Constitutio Antoniniana of Emperor Caracalla .
  • The Papyri bibliothecae universitatis Gissensis is a separate collection of the Justus Liebig University , founded in 1908 by the philologists Otto Immisch and Alfred Körte .
  • The Papyri Iandanae was a private collection of the Giessen philologist Karl Kalbfleisch (1868-1946), who bequeathed it to the university in his will. It contains, among other things, a fragment from Cicero's "Speeches against Verres".

Papyrus collection of the Institute for Papyrology Heidelberg Heidelberg University Germany approx.11,000 papyri, parchments , rag papers , ostracas The second largest collection in Germany after Berlin. About 5000 Greek, 3200 Arabic, 1370 Coptic , 815 demotic , a few hieratic , Middle Persian , Hebrew , Aramaic and Syrian papyri, parchment and rag paper; 760 ostraka. The core of the collection are the papyri the private collection of the consul of the German Reich in Cairo Carl August Reinhardt (1856-1903), who in 1897 by selling his collection, by a well-known donation of the Director General of the Portland Cement plant Heidelberg Friedrich Schott purchased made possible the establishment of the Heidelberg papyrus collection by the chief librarian Karl Zangemeister and the grand ducal Baden minister for justice, culture and education Wilhelm Nokk . Further pieces were added by the Baden papyrus excavations in Qarâra and el-Hibeh in 1913 and 1914, and also by the activities of the German papyrus cartel.
Papyrus collection of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena Friedrich Schiller University Jena Germany 2000 papyri and ostraka Contains works by Irenäus von Lyon , u. a. the so-called " Irenaeus- Papyrus". Papyri from the 3rd century BC BC to 7th century AD in Greek, Demotic, Coptic, Arabic and Latin script. Most are written in Greek and Demotic. The collection was founded through purchases through the papyrus cartel in the years 1904–1913. Smaller donations were made later, such as the private collection of papyrologist Friedrich Zucker .
Papyrus collection at the University of Cologne University of Cologne Germany approx. 6000 papyri and other inscribed objects Is the third largest papyrus collection in Germany after Berlin and Heidelberg. Contains, among other things, the Mani Codex , a life story of Mani who founded Manichaeism . It also contains a poem by the poet Archilochus .
Papyrus and ostraca collection at the Leipzig University Library Leipzig University Library Germany approx. 5000 papyri One of the most important and largest collections of ancient papyri and ostraka in German-speaking countries. The foundations for the collection were laid in the 19th century, when one of the most famous papyri, the Ebers Papyrus , came into the collection. A large part of the collection, like many other German institutions, was acquired in 1902 as part of the German Papyrus Cartel. Most of the papyri come from Hermopolis and were written in Greek in the 4th century. About 90% of the collection is Greek, some Demotic, Coptic, and Arabic.

The bulk of the roughly estimated 400,000 Oxyrhynchus papyri that were discovered and excavated in Oxyrhynchus at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries are now in the Sackler Library, mostly uninventory in boxes. Much of the fragments used to be in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford . Others are in the British Museum in London , the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, and many other locations.
