The Sackler Library ( Sacklerbibliothek ) is the central library of the University of Oxford for scientific literature in the field of classical studies , archeology and art history .

history

The library's neo-classical building was completed in 2001 and opened on September 24 of this year. It replaces the library of the Ashmolean Museum . The location is 1 St John Street, at the back of the Ashmolean Museum. The library was founded and named after him through a generous donation from the pharmaceutical entrepreneur Mortimer Sackler .

The building was designed by the architects Robert Adam and Paul Hanvey . The striking building is characterized by a central round block. This is how it fulfills its classic purpose, as one of the outer walls is decorated with the model of a classic frieze . The design of the entrance goes back to the Doric order of the Temple of Apollo at Bassae , which was first examined by Charles Robert Cockerell and who designed the Ashmolean Museum.

Stocks

The library includes the collections of several older libraries, specifically the Ashmolean Library , the Classics Lending Library , the Eastern Art Library, and the History of Art Library . The most important collection focuses are:

The library also houses around 100,000 fragments of the Oxyrhynchus papyri , one of the largest collections of Egyptian papyri in the world.
