Karl Friedrich Zangemeister

Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Zangemeister (born November 28, 1837 in Hallungen , † June 8, 1902 in Heidelberg ), occasionally Carl Zangemeister in literature , was a German librarian and classical philologist .

Life

During his studies he became a member of the Makaria Bonn fraternity in 1856 . After studying at the universities of Berlin and Bonn , Zangemeister received his doctorate in Berlin in 1862 with the dissertation De Horatii vocibus singularibus . He worked for a short time as a high school teacher and then spent several years in Italy as a member of the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum (CIL) project .

In 1868 he went to Heidelberg University Library as a librarian , where in 1873, after five years of activity, he was appointed senior librarian. In 1875 he was designated a full professor in this office. In 1891 the Heidelberg University appointed him a full honorary professor of epigraphy .

As senior librarian, Zangemeister made a special contribution to the new real catalog (1885 and 1893) and also had an influence on the design of the new library building, which he did not live to see opening in 1905. From 1894 he was also a member of the central management of the Royal Archaeological Institute in Berlin.

His estate is in the Gotha Research Library .
