Jakob Wille (born May 6, 1853 as Philipp Jakob Wille in Frankenthal (Pfalz) , † July 22, 1929 in Heidelberg ) was a German librarian and historian . He was head of the Heidelberg University Library from 1902 to 1922 and worked for the General German Biography (ADB).

Life

Wille studied history, classical philology and law in Heidelberg, Bonn, Leipzig and Munich. In 1876 he received his doctorate from the University of Heidelberg and in 1882 began a career as a librarian. In 1898 he was appointed honorary professor for regional history and historical auxiliary sciences at the University of Heidelberg.

In 1902, Wille succeeded the late Karl Zangemeister as head library director of Heidelberg University Library, an office that he held until 1922. He was thus the second professional librarian to head this institution. The new library building was also started during Zangemeister's tenure. His successor Wille planned the move, the building was opened on November 6, 1905 and is still in use today. The latter is responsible for the inscription on the west facade. He had the inscription proposed by his predecessor "Timor dei initium sapientiae" ( The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom ) replaced by "Inter folia fructus" ( Between the leaves [of the book] the fruits [of knowledge]).

In 1906 he was appointed Privy Councilor . Wille became a member of the Society for Rhenish History in 1890 , an extraordinary member in 1892 and a full member of the Baden Historical Commission in 1896, and an extraordinary member in 1909 and a full member in 1927 of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences . In 1905 the librarian became an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature .

family

Willes parents were Ludwig Wille and Apollonia Franz, the father was mayor of Frankenthal from 1868–1876, after him the Wille-Strasse of the city is named. The librarian married Rosalie Hedwig Blesch in 1882 and the couple had children.

Willes cousin is the Swiss General Ulrich Wille . The paternal ancestors Vuille came from La Sagne in today's canton of Neuchâtel . The great-great-grandfather Henry Vuille emigrated to Zweibrücken around 1740 . The ancestors went to Hamburg via Frankenthal . While the general's family moved to Switzerland, the librarian's father returned to Frankenthal.
