from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sir Alfred Chester Beatty (born February 7, 1875 in New York , New York , † January 19, 1968 in Monte Carlo , Monaco ) was an American mining engineer and collector.

Beatty graduated from Columbia University in New York as a mining engineer. He made his fortune in Cripple Creek , Colorado , and other mining companies around the world. He was often called " Copper King called" (King of Copper).

He was an avid collector throughout his life and by the 1940s owned a remarkable and impressive collection of oriental and western material. In 1950 he moved his collections to Dublin , Ireland . The Chester Beatty Library , which houses this collection, moved from Shrewsbury Road to Dublin Castle in 2000 . In 1954 he was knighted and in 1957 he became an honorary citizen of Ireland. When he died in 1968, he was given a state funeral: he is the only private person in Irish history to have received such an honor.

Some papyrus manuscripts that are valuable for understanding the history of Egypt bear the name of Chester Beatty (Papyrus Chester Beatty ..., abbreviated: pChester Beatty ...).

The collection provides important source material for understanding the context of the Old and New Testaments.
