Chester Beatty Library

The Chester Beatty Library ( Irish Leabharlann Chester Beatty ) is a museum in Dublin , Ireland .

The focus of the collection is on ancient to medieval manuscripts, prints, books and works of art of a sacred and secular kind, especially from the Middle and Far East. The collection provides important source material for understanding the history of Egypt and the context of the Bible and the Koran. Worth mentioning are, for example, a copy of al-Muwatta by Malik ibn Anas , parts of the colored first edition of the life of the Prophet and the Gospel of Mani .

The holdings are based on the extensive private collection of the American industrialist Alfred Chester Beatty .

The museum has existed since 1950 and has been housed in Dublin Castle since February 2000 . In 2002 the facility was named European Museum of the Year .
