Oslo papyrus collection

The Oslo Papyrus Collection (Papyri Osloenses) is a collection of manuscripts from the Oslo University Library. It contains 2,272 inventoried papyri , mostly fragments from the 3rd century BC. BC to the 7th century, mostly in Greek .

history

The collection was founded by Samson Eitrem , who acquired 483 papyrus fragments in Egypt for the University of Oslo in 1920 . In the following years further fragments were acquired in collaboration with the British Museum in London , Columbia University in New York , Michigan University in Ann Arbor and Princeton University . Between 1927 and 1929, Leiv Amundsen, Professor Eitrem's assistant, bought other papyri in Egypt, and in 1936 Samson Eitrem bought papyri in Egypt. 1954 some fragments from the possession of Nahman jun. bought.

The papyri were re-inventoried in 1992. 280 texts were edited. 237 of them have so far been digitized in the Oslo Papyri Electronic System (OPES).
