The Bogotá professional fire brigade (Spanish Unidad Administrativa Especial Cuerpo Oficial de Bomberos Bogotá, Distrito Capital , German  special administrative unit of the Bogotá professional fire brigade, capital district ) is the professional fire brigade of the Colombian capital Bogotá . There is also the volunteer fire brigade ( Spanish Cuerpo de Bomberos Voluntarios de Bogotá , German  corps of the volunteer fire brigade of Bogotá ). The primary operational area of the fire brigades is the capital district of Bogotá.

Professional fire brigade

history

After a major fire on December 7, 1889 at the intersection of Carrera 7 and Calle 13 had destroyed a large part of the square and the military fire brigade had to look on hopelessly, the fire brigade was founded on May 18, 1895. This was then the first "real" fire brigade in Colombia. At the time, it had 25 former police officers and a fire station in the La Candelaria district. The professional fire brigade was officially founded on December 27, 1919. After the Second World War, on July 19, 1950, a second fire station followed for the north of the city; at that time the city had about 700,000 inhabitants. Both fire stations together had 116 firefighters. In 1975 women were admitted to the Bogotá fire department for the first time and later also to the other fire departments in Colombia. In 2006 the name was changed to the current name. The President of the Republic of Colombia Juan Manuel Santos has been the head of the fire brigade since 2012, and a fire engine and personal protective equipment are available for official fire service purposes.

General

The fire brigade has 18 fire stations, two fire schools (one in Bogotá and one in Soacha ) and a control center. The fire brigade currently has around 850 firefighters on active duty and others in the command and control center. The firefighters have been divided into three shifts since 2019. It is the only fire brigade in Colombia in a large city that does not operate an ambulance service. The Bogotá fire department is one of 20 professional fire departments and around 800 fire departments in Colombia.

Calls

The fire department has around 36,000 fire and rescue missions of all kinds every year. It takes on fire fighting, technical assistance, animal rescue, environmental protection, fire investigation, rescuing casualties, helps the municipal rescue service in large-scale operations and, together with the armed forces and the national police, supports nationwide and continental-wide operations such as the earthquake in Ecuador in 2016 or the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.

Volunteer firefighter

history

After a fire in a warehouse on December 16, 1958, killed 82 people, the police wanted Colonel Alberto Bernal Garcia to find support for the professional fire department. He decided on a volunteer fire brigade because it can offer a lot more staff than the professional fire brigade. Thus, in early 1959, a volunteer fire brigade was set up.

General

The volunteer fire department has a fire station in Kennedy. With three vehicles it is a very small fire brigade, there are around. 40 active powers. The firefighters are trained at the professional fire brigade schools.

Some courses as well as advanced training are offered at the school, such as gas explosion, foam inserts or USAR. The Academy of Fire Brigades (Spanish Academia de Bomberos ) is a fire brigade school in Soacha, but is subordinate to the Bogotá professional fire brigade. At the academy, building operations such as house fires, earthquakes or rescue at height and depth can be practiced. Both schools train according to NFPA.

Control center

The control center (span. Central de Comunicaciones ) is located at fire station 4 and has a staff of 12 dispatchers and one dispatcher. The control center accepts around 100 fire brigade operations per day, dispatches the units to the scene of operations and helps to investigate the situation using satellite images and road maps. The control center crew maintains the command vehicle, which is also stationed at fire station 4.
