from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Institute for Papyrology is an institution of the Ruprecht-Karls-University in Heidelberg and the only independent university institute for papyrology in Germany. With over 11,000 papyri , parchments , rag papers and ostracas from Egypt, it has one of the largest papyrus collections in the country.

The Institute for Papyrology emerged from the papyrus collection of the Heidelberg University Library , which was created in 1897. In July 1952 this was made into an independent institution under the name "University Papyrus Collection", but it was still located in its old premises. In October 1976 it was converted into the current institute, and in 1982, due to lack of space, it was moved from the east wing of the university library to the building at Hauptstrasse 126 . Today the institute is located at Marstallstrasse 6.

The institute's collection includes around 5,000 Greek papyri, 3,200 Arabic papyri and rag papers , 1,370 Coptic , 815 demotic and other hieratic , Middle Persian , Hebrew , Aramaic and Syrian papyri as well as 780 ostracas. Since 1999, the holdings of the collection have been digitized or made accessible through electronic catalogs. In Heidelberg Complete index of the Greek papyri of Egypt (HGV) papyri other collections are recorded. The institute also has an extensive special library.
