Richard Seider

Richard Seider (born March 9, 1913 in Wiesental near Karlsruhe , † October 24, 1988 in Heidelberg ) was a German papyrologist and paleographer .

Richard Seider studied classical philology and papyrology at the University of Heidelberg , where he was particularly influenced by the papyrologists Friedrich Bilabel and Karl Preisendanz . After his doctorate (1938) on the administrative history of the Ptolemies , he received the travel grant of the German Archaeological Institute for 1942/1943 .

After the Second World War , Seider worked as an academic advisor at the Department of Classical Philology at Heidelberg University and in the university's papyrus collection, which he took over in 1969. In 1971 he was appointed honorary professor and in 1973 promoted to academic director. He was director of the Institute of Papyrology until he retired in 1980. His successor was Dieter Hagedorn .

Richard Seider has made numerous studies in papyrology and palaeography. His systematic monographs on the palaeography of the Greek and Latin papyri, the complete completion of which prevented his death, are particularly well known.
