life and work

August Sartorius grew up in Göttingen in an academic environment. His grandfather Georg Friedrich Sartorius von Waltershausen (1765-1828) was the first time the work Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith translated. August Sartorius studied law and economics in Göttingen from 1880 to 1885. During this time he also made numerous trips to southern France, Tangier and the Canary Islands . From 1871 to 1879 he went on a research trip through the USA (1871-18). In 1881 he married Lotty von Kapp-Herr. In 1885 he was appointed full professor at the Political Science Faculty of the University of Zurich , where he stayed until 1888. During this time he taught economics, taxation and finance. One reason for his short stay in Zurich may have been the integration problems of German professors. A little disappointed, he left Zurich to take a position as full professor at the University of Strasbourg in 1888 . From 1913 to 1914 he was rector of the University of Strasbourg. After the First World War he had to leave Strasbourg and return to Germany. He died in Germany in 1938.

Many of his works deal with the world economy and with the United States of America . His interest in the United States can also be seen in his diaries from 1880 to 1881.
