The institute emerged from the Società Italiana per la ricerca dei Papiri greci e latini in Egitto . This was founded in 1908 on the initiative and under the direction of Girolamo Vitelli , who was Professor of Classical Philology at the University of Florence at that time. In 1927 the company was dissolved.

In 1939 the institute was named Istituto Papirologico "Girolamo Vitelli" . From 1943 to 1957 another three volumes of the PSI were published. Other directors were Nicola Terzaghi (1949–1963), Vittorio Bartoletti (1963–1967) and Manfredo Manfredi (1968–1991). In 1991 the institute was transformed into a Ente Nazionale di Ricerca non Strumentale . Manfredo Manfredi became president. In 1998, Vice President Angelo Casanova took over the management on a provisional basis, with Guido Bastianini becoming the next President .

In 2005 the institute was re-incorporated into the University of Florence. It has been headed by Guido Bastianini since 2006.
