Life

Karl Kalbfleisch was the son of Konrad Kalbfleisch and his wife Emilie, daughter of the printer and publisher Karl Reinhold Janda (1805–1869). He attended high school in Hanau and studied at the universities of Leipzig and Berlin . In Berlin he received his doctorate in philosophy. He then carried out medical studies here. Veal made scientific trips to Paris in 1894 and 1897, was in Italy in 1899 and in England in 1903.

In 1898 he completed his habilitation at the University of Freiburg . In 1900 he became an associate professor at the University of Rostock . In the same position he went to the University of Marburg in 1903 , where he became a full professor in 1904 and a full professor of classical philology at the University of Giessen in 1913 . Kalbfleisch, who took part in the organizational tasks of the Giessen University as rector of the Alma Mater in the winter semester of 1919/20 , was made an honorary doctor of the medical faculty of Rostock University in 1919. In 1930 he became a member of the Association Egyptologique Reine Elisabeth . After taking power and bringing the National Socialist university operations into line, he retired in 1934.

In 1933 he had already become head of the two Giessen papyrus collections and held this position until 1944. After a bombing raid destroyed his home, he retired to his birthplace, where he died two years later. Kalbfleisch's medical, natural and historical work extended particularly to papyrus writings that he had received from his grandfather. Since he had no offspring from his two marriages, he left this papyrus collection to the University of Giessen.
